Pastors's Message

Under Grace

For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not
under law but under grace. Romans 6:14

To be under something is to be controlled by that same something. We have heard stories of earthquake survivors in Haiti living long days, even weeks buried under the rubble. I can’t imagine the fear and terror of being in the dark, hurt, without food or water, unable to do anything to improve the situation.

In a similar fashion, we are born under the control of our sinful nature. There is nothing we can do to change our spiritual situation. We are helplessly locked under the rubble of the sinful nature. We make choices that we know are wrong, yet we make them anyway. We choose to continue under the influence of our sinful nature, under the influence of the evil in this world.

It could be said that we are guilty of the crime, “LUI”, living under the influence. It’s sort of like DUI, driving under the influence. Dangerous, harmful, inconsiderate of other people – that’s the effect of our sinful nature on ourselves and on each other. Like Paul writes, “Who will rescue me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:24)

There is good news - a great reply to Paul’s question. We have born again through baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. The effect of this act of God is remove us from the control of sin to the control of the Holy Spirit. We are no longer under the dominion of sin.

Now we can live “under grace,” that is, under the control of forgiveness and the new life led by the Holy Spirit. This is what Jesus came to accomplish for us. It’s done, complete, just as finished as when Jesus said on the cross, “It is finished.” Take a long look at your personality, your behavior, and remind yourself that you live under God’s grace now.

Glad to be in Christ’s service,
