Listen to Him This is My beloved Son; listen to Him. So speaks the Father in heaven when Jesus is transfigured on the mountaintop. This is from the Gospel reading for Transfiguration Sunday. Lent is just around the corner. We can either ignore Lent or we can get into it. To ignore it, we just skip worship and going to church or Sunday School. To get into Lent, we attend worship on the weekends and on Wednesday evenings. Maybe you are used to ignoring Lent and going to worship. You wont get any more out of it than what you put into it. If you call it boring, same old stuff, nothing I want to hear, then that is what Lent will be to you. Your worship will be flat, dull, worthless. Not because Lent is flat, dull, or worthless, but because your faith is flat, dull, and worthless. If you dont attend worship, you cant claim to have any faith. Jesus made a habit of attending worship. As was His custom, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and He stood up to read. (Luke 4:16) Jesus worshiped and took an active part in worship. If He felt the need to do that, what excuse can we possibly offer to justify skipping worship with our fellow Christians? Are we better than Jesus, thinking we dont need what He needed? If you do attend worship and put your head, your heart, and your energy into Lent, you will be rewarded by the Holy Spirit. You will come to appreciate even more what Christ did for you at the cross. You will love Him even more than you did before. You will grow in your faith life and in the way you live the faith given to you. Go ahead, keep listening to Him! And if you hadnt planned to do anything more than the little or nothing you have been doing, why not listen to Him? You just might be powerfully surprised by what happens in your soul and in your life.
